Your Water Impact: One Drop at a Time

Our first STEAM class of the year is Water. In it we have been learning about water usage throughout the world, our personal impact, and how we can reduce it. We left the classroom twice, first to go on the Chicago Water Taxi and examine water as a means of transport, and later to walk to the river and carry water back to schools in an attempt to see how difficult it is for people in areas where water is more scarce.

The Water Taxi was our first Field Experience of the year. We went to see first hand how some people use water every day. Although the river is only in certain areas of the city, for those in the areas it runs through it can be valuable as transportation. We took the water taxi from Goose Island to Ogilvie, and then Ogilvie to Michigan Avenue before taking the Red Line back. It was interesting to compare the different ways people use transport, and also how and why some are thought of as better or more convenient than others.

Our second venture into the world was again, heading to the river. We headed there with containers to fill with water and bring back to school,  to get a reference point to determine how long it would take for us to carry the amount of water we use each day. I brought a wagon, which made it much easier for me to carry the water. The distance from our school to the Chicago River was only 1300 feet, but there definitely still were difficulties, and if I had to do it multiple times it would’ve gotten much more tiring.

All of our work, both inside and outside of the school was a great help with the project, and I hope you enjoy it!y
