Fixing Sex Education

For the first Action Project of the final humanities class of the year, Policy, we have been learning about the legislative branch. We specifically have spent a lot of time talking about the legislative branch and its role in war. We spoke with Troy LaRaviere, head of Chicago's Principals and Administrators Association, and my dad, Andy Davis about the functions of the state legislature, and how bills become laws. The culminating project for this unit was to write an email/letter to a legislator about a bill currently being considered by their governing body. When we talked to our guests however, we learned that phone calls are typically much more effective than letters and emails. With this information, we shifted the assignment to the format of a voicemail. You can read mine and listen below.

Sex education is often overlooked or taken for granted, and that is a mistake. The numbers don't lie,
and states with good sex education that is relevant to all students result in safer and healthier people.
When I was talking to people about this project, many of them were surprised to learn the law says what it
does. We take state law for granted, especially when we assume it aligns with our personal beliefs. This is
a dangerous assumption to make. Bad laws that hurt people pass when people aren't paying attention, so
this assignment was a great reminder to actually stay informed with state law, which I hope you do after
reading this.
