Highland Cattle are Pretty Cool 😎🤘

Hello and welcome to my first STEAM class AP of the year, Population. In the first unit we have discussed different forms of classification and organizing when it comes to living things. We also dissected a worm. For this action project, we created collages of an animal of our choice, found their taxonomy, and worked with some other classmates to describe them in relation to other animals. You can check it out below.

Highland Cattle naturally live in the Scottish Highlands, although they are also raised commercially in North America and Australia. They typically live about 20 years. A group of them are called a fold, and they are usually kept for dairy and meat. At 18 months old they can reproduce and they mate in May/June with 9 month pregnancies.

Bos taurus

Kingdom- Animalia (they are animals)

Phylum- Chordata (they have spinal chords)

Class- Mammalia (they have live birth and hair)

Order- Artiodactyla (they have cloven hooves)

Family- Bovidae (with the exception of some domesticated species, all have horns)

Genus- Bos (Large teeth and four chambered stomach)

We also made collages of our animals, which you can see next to the reference image below.

Cow on Pupers, Nilfanion, September 9, 2009, Pupers Hill

Set theory:

U= { highland cattle, lion, velociraptor, golden snub-nosed monkey, panda, sea bunny}

This is the universal set, it is what animals I am comparing the highland cattle to

cow ∈ Animals with fur

This set is of “Animals with fur” contains lions, pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and highland cattle.

Animals that have fur = {highland cattle, lion, golden snub-nosed monkey, panda}

Animals that walk on four legs ⊂ Animals that have fur

In this set, all of the animals that walk on four legs are a subset of animals with fur

Highland cattle ∈ Animals that walk on four legs

Highland cattle are an element of the subset animals that walk on four legs

We also made Venn Diagrams to compare our animals to others. You can check it out below:

That concludes ths AP. I enjoyed doing it because I felt like even though it was a bit time consuming since there were so many different components it was not boring just because there were so many different parts. I thought the variety made it interesting and also easier to break up work. I hope you enjoyed learning about the highland cattle at least somewhat as much as I enjoyed staring at cow pictures.
