Volunteering 2019-20

At GCE Lab School, by the graduation all students are supposed to have done 200 hours of community service. This works out to 50 hours a year. This blog post is an overview of all the community service I did last year. I did five different things during my freshman year for volunteer hours.

I started off the year with my friend Kaylie at Sunshine Gospel Ministries. We were tutoring 1-5th graders and helping them with their homework. Most of it was simple math, which was a solid confidence boost. Nothing makes you feel smart like explaining what 5+1 is. It was one of the first times I've worked with children, so it wasn't completely straightforward, but I still enjoyed it. I don't have photos from it because my phone was away most of the time. You can get involved with them by clicking the link above.

Next, I returned to my roots, and volunteered with the Lincoln Elementary School debate team. I was a member of this team for two years, so it was nice to come back and share my skills with current members. I was doing things like checking in during speaking exercises and judging practice rounds. I also don't have any photos from this for the same reason. You can volunteer at Lincoln by clicking here.

Finally, I finished off the year by volunteering with the Marie Newman campaign. I did this with Kaylie and Abby. We went to one of their offices after school and made phone calls to voters to ask them to turn out to vote and answer their questions about Marie Newman. Towards the end it was kind of odd because the primary election was about a week into quarantine. She won the primary, and is currently up in the general election. You can volunteer for her by clicking here.

I had a great time completing my volunteer hours in 2019 and 2020, and I hope that this year is even better.
